Why Readiness-Based Confirmation Preparation?

At St. Francis, we have implemented a Readiness-Based Model for preparation for the sacrament of confirmation, offering our Youth a customized journey towards the sacrament of Confirmation between 8th and 12th grade.

The preparation period is a time of ongoing discernment for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation and dedicating themselves to a life of discipleship with Jesus Christ.

  • Candidates will be encouraged to take ownership of their preparation towards the Sacrament of Confirmation with the support of their parents and sponsor.

  • Candidates will self-identify as ready to move forward with preparation when they:

    • are attending Mass on a weekly basis

    • are participating in formation (Youth Nights)

    • personally express a desire to receive the sacrament of confirmation

Opportunities for potential candidates to step forward will be a made in a variety of ways through youth nights, retreats, and other opportunities. Once the candidate comes forward and submits their Confirmation Inquiry, we will contact parents (using the contact information provided on the student registration form for Youth Night) to begin the milestone process for Confirmation preparation.

At youth nights and retreats, all youth (including Confirmation Candidates), will have opportunities to encounter Jesus and grow in their personal relationship with the living God and knowledge of the faith. Youth will also have opportunities to connect with a small group of peers to pray, support and celebrate candidates on their journey.

During this time, parents will be empowered to accompany their child on their journey of discipleship through prayer, participation at Mass as a family and living out their faith together by loving and serving others.

The readiness model aligns with the church’s mission of creating missionary disciples who encounter Christ humbly, serve others joyfully and proclaim the gospel BOLDLY. It is our fervent prayer that these youth and their parents will be provided with the best opportunity to become missionary disciples in the community and not simply check a box in a classroom.

Following this model, parents are not able to register their student for Confirmation preparation at the time of registration. Instead, parents will register their student for their corresponding Youth Night.  If/when students comes forward to begin their preparation while participating in our Youth Nights, registration for Sacrament specific preparation will be sent and any applicable sacrament preparation fees will be due.

Step-by-Step

To register your teen for Confirmation:

Start by registering your teen for Youth Night

  • Once your teen comes forward to begin their preparation during one of our Youth Nights throughout the year, our team will contact you to offer the opportunity to finalize Sacrament Registration and submit any applicable Sacrament fees.

Attend a mandatory Parent Session

  • All parents desiring for their children to receive the sacrament must choose one of the following sessions offered:

    • Fall 2024 date TBA

Attend the corresponding Youth Night (Middle School or High School)

  • Middle School (grades 6-8) | Sundays from 5:45- 7pm

  • High School (grades 9-12) | Sundays from 7:30-9pm

Like we mentioned above, our Readiness-Based model gives the teens an invitation to "Come Forward" when they are ready to begin their preparation journey for the Sacrament of Confirmation. â€‹

Before "Coming Forward"

Key indicators of readiness before they decide to "Come Forward" include:

  • attending Mass on a weekly basis

  • participating in weekly Youth Nights

  • expressing a personal desire to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation

"Coming Forward"

Opportunities for teens to "Come Forward" to begin preparation are offered during Youth Nights throughout the year.

After "Coming Forward"

Once teens come forward, they will finish Confirmation Registration and complete a series of

9 Milestones at home with the support and engagement of their parents and sponsor while continuing to attend weekly Youth Nights. Teens will journey through Milestones at their own pace.

  • First Communion: Additional Milestones are available for those desiring to prepare for their First Communion as well.

Receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation

When a teen has completed their Milestone journey, they will be eligible to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at the next available Confirmation Mass (Spring and Fall dates offered).
