Fasting & Abstinence
Fasting under current canon law of the Western Church, a day of fast is one on which Catholics 18 - 59 years old are required to keep a limited fast. A fast is characterized by limiting oneself to a single, meatless meal along with two smaller meals, as long as these smaller meals do not add up to a second meal.

Snacking is not allowed. Drinking coffee, tea, juices, etc between meals is permitted on fast days. Those with medical conditions requiring a greater or more regular food intake are exempt.

Abstinence refers to refraining from eating meat, a food that symbolizes prosperity. To abstain from meat is to align ourselves with the poor who cannot afford to provide meat for themselves and their families.

Almsgiving
Almsgiving means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is “a witness to fraternal charity” and “a work of justice pleasing to God.”

Prayer

Prayer is the process of listening to and responding to God’s daily call. It sustains and nurtures our relationship with our triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Without prayer, personal and communal, this relationship is diminished, sometimes to the point of complete silence on our part. Every day the Spirit of Jesus invites us to enter into that serious conversion that leads to blessed communion.

In Lent, we are called to pray, fast, and give. What are your plans for this Lent?

Ayuno y abstinencia
